Quoting for advisory or editorial work is fraught with difficulty, as authors tend to want different things and can afford different things. I can offer several alternative approaches, depending on what you would prefer.
You have a fixed or limited budget that won’t stretch to any of the packages on offer, or you’ve got a few chapters of something but you don’t know where you’re going next.
For £35 per hour (minimum, two hours) I will read as much of your manuscript as I can and then give you a written critique of what you’ve done, along with some suggestions as to where you might go next. Book me for as long as you want, and I’ll do what I can in that time. It won’t be perfect, but at least it’ll be something.
You’ve got a partial or complete manuscript and you want to know how much you’re paying and what you’ll get in return.
The Bronze Package (Cost: 1.5p per word of manuscript)
This package focuses on one read-through of your manuscript with comments, plus a covering report. It includes a general evaluation of your work with a structural edit looking at plot, pace, characters and style. It’s ideal if you are unsure about what you have written or where it’s going, are bogged-down in the detail, or generally need some advice about marketability.
The Silver Package (Cost: 2p per word of manuscript)
This package is more detailed than Package 1, and focuses on two read-throughs of your manuscript. It includes a structural edit looking at plot, pace, characters and style followed by a line edit for grammar, typos and punctuation. It’s ideal if you have a complete manuscript which needs some loving attention before being sent off to a traditional agent or print publisher.
The Gold Package (Cost: 3p per word of manuscript)
This package is more detailed than Package 1, and focuses on two read-throughs of your manuscript. It includes a structural edit looking at plot, pace, characters and style followed by a line edit for grammar, typos and punctuation. After you have considered my suggestions and made any further changes you want, I will format your manuscript properly and return it to you. Advice, in the form of a separate report, on covering letters, publicity and pitching is also included. It’s ideal if you want a complete nose-to-tail service resulting in a ready-to-go product.
In the past few years I’ve visited many schools and literary festivals and given talks on creative writing.
For a fixed fee of £175, plus travel expenses I will travel to wherever you want, give you a 90-minute presentation on the main elements of creative writing (including questions) and then have a one-to-one (or one-to-several, if you’ve bought friends) discussion for another 90 minutes on any subject you want. You can ask me general questions about writing, or specific questions about whatever manuscript(s) you happen to be working on. This could be in your living room, a room in a library or something else that you’ve hired for the day. I can bring sandwiches and a thermos, or you can arrange some catering. Your choice.
